Week 11 – Building Up

Monday – Rest Day

I’m so ready for a sunny holiday. I’d love to get away and get some miles done in warmer climates. One day I’ll be fast enough to justify going to a training camp, but for now I just have to keep chipping away until I get there.

Tuesday – 8.3 miles

This was an interval session broken up into 8x 1k off 90s recovery, with warm up and cool down. The aim was to do all the reps between 4:35 and 4:40.

My splits: 4:37, 4:34, 4:39, 4:35, 4:39, 4:36, 4:37, 4:32

That was definitely not easy. I was nearly sick after the 3rd one, and after the 5th I was sure I was going to fade. I really had to put my brain into overtime to not let the fatigue get in the way of the times. I told myself I’d put my splits on this blog post – that way I’d be really embarrassed if one of them was slower than target time. It worked!

Wednesday – 4 miles

Lunch miles today round Islington. My legs were a little tired from yesterday’s session, but not to the point where it affected my pacing. Embarrassingly, I did manage to run past a colleague (who was waving at me about a metre away from where I was) without realising they were there, so it looked like I totally blanked them. Oops. We laughed about it later, I explained that you get so many funny looks when you’re running that you kind of learn to blank everything out. And I am the queen when it comes to day dreaming.

I also did some core work in the evening.

Thursday – 4 miles

Lunch miles round Islington again today. I remembered to keep an eye out for my colleague this time, so I actually saw them to wave and say hello *pats self on back*.

I took some time to stretch out in the evening. My muscles are super tight at the moment, definitely not helped by sitting so much during the day.

Friday – Rest Day

I’ve started to research lightweight shoes for sessions. I much prefer the feel of lighter and flatter shoes on the track, and this summer I’ll have access to one again. I’ve always used the Saucony Kinvaras, but that was a fair few editions ago now and there’s a lot more choice when it comes to lightweight shoes. I need to get myself down the running shop to try on a few different kinds to see which ones I prefer.

Saturday – 6.8 miles

Broken up into 8 minutes, 2×4 minutes, 8×1 minutes, 2×4 minutes. With 1 mile warm up and cool down.

I’m not even going to bother listing my splits, but I only hit 1 or 2 of my target times. Its frustrating because I knew I could have smashed that session, but I just felt so groggy and not in the zone. I find it so difficult to get going for weekend sessions, especially Saturdays as I can never get up early enough to get it in at a quiet time. I can’t wait to move in a few months.

I did another session of core work later that evening.

Sunday – 12 miles

My legs were absolutely knackered for this. From about mile 3 I just wanted to stop and go back to bed. Luckily I had saved up epsidodes of my favourite podcast to listen to and it helped get me round big time.

I definitely overdressed for the weather too, I would have been more comfortable in shorts, but given how cold it’s been recently I wore my capris and regretted it the whole way round.

Still, it’s done and dusted. I’ve had a really good mileage week, and even if it’s not always fun and games, it’s getting me where I want to be. I’ve got a lot of work to do if I want to break 1:41 in October. I had hoped to be in a place to break 1:40, which at the moment doesn’t look likely (given my last 2 performances) but it’s still in the back of my mind as a possibility.

Total miles for the week: 35.1

Thanks so much for reading lovelies, and I’ll be back next week with another update x
